Drinking water quality research and improvement measures

Abstract

The dissertation examines drinking water quality and improvement measures. The object of the work is a groundwater with ammonium ions and concentrations of iron, manganese and organic compounds that exceed permissible drinking water hygienic standards. The aim of the work is to examine drinking water treatment technologies. There are objectives: to carry out a comparative analysis of methods for organic compounds determination; to determinate organic compounds fractions in groundwater; to investigate the efficiency of three coagulants and possible applications of filter media in removal of ammonium ions, iron, manganese and organic compounds from groundwater. Under field conditions, to examine drinking water treatment technology. The dissertation is comprised of an introduction, three chapters, conclusions and recommendations, a bibliography and a list of the author's published works. The introduction discusses the research problem and the topicality of the work; it also describes the object, formulates the aim and the objectives of the work and describes the methodology of research, scientific novelty of the work, practical value and defended propositions. In the end of the introduction, the list of published works on the topic of the dissertation by the author and the papers read in the conferences are provided as well as the structure of the dissertation. The first chapter is the review of literature. Water quality parameters and improvement measures are provided. In the end of the chapter the conclusions are formulated and the objectives of the dissertation are revised. The second chapter provides the methodologies for water quality parameters determination. Laboratory tests methodology for evaluation of possible applications of filter media is described and the work of the drinking water treatment plant setup under field conditions is presented. The third chapter provides the comparative analysis of methods for organic compounds determination, the results of identification tests of organic compounds fractions, the test results of coagulants efficiency, the test results of the possible applications of filter media and the test results of the work of drinking water treatment plant setup under field conditions. 12 scientific papers have been published on the topic of dissertation: two of them in scientific journals referred in the ISI Web of Science database, four in scientific journals included in other databases, one in conference proceedings referred in the ISI Proceedings database, four in foreign international conference proceedings, one in Lithuanian conference. The results of the investigations carried out for the dissertation have been published in one national and five international scientific conferences.

Disertacijoje nagrinėjama geriamojo vandens kokybė bei gerinimo priemonės. Pagrindinis tyrimo objektas yra požeminis vanduo, kuriame leistinas geriamojo vandens higienos normas viršija amonio jonai, geležies, mangano ir organinių junginių koncentracijos. Disertacijos tikslas – ištirti geriamojo vandens ruošimo technologijas. Darbe sprendžiami uždaviniai: atlikti organinių junginių nustatymo metodų palyginamąją analizę, nustatyti požeminiame vandenyje esančias organinių junginių frakcijas, ištirti trijų koaguliantų efektyvumą bei filtravimo užpildų dozuojant koaguliantą panaudojimo galimybes šalinant amonio jonus, geležies, mangano ir organinius junginius iš požeminio vandens. Gamybinėmis sąlygomis ištirti geriamojo vandens ruošimo įrenginius. Disertaciją sudaro įvadas, trys skyriai, bendrosios išvados ir rekomendacijos, naudotos literatūros ir autoriaus publikacijų disertacijos tema sąrašas. Įvadiniame skyriuje aptariama tiriamoji problema, darbo aktualumas, aprašomas tyrimų objektas, formuluojamas darbo tikslas ir uždaviniai, aprašoma tyrimų metodika, darbo mokslinis naujumas, darbo rezultatų praktinė reikšmė, ginamieji teiginiai. Įvado pabaigoje pristatomos disertacijos tema autoriaus paskelbtos publikacijos ir pranešimai konferencijose bei disertacijos struktūra. Pirmasis skyrius skirtas mokslinės literatūros analizei. Pateikiami vandens kokybės parametrai ir gerinimo priemonės. Skyriaus pabaigoje formuluojamos išvados ir tikslinami disertacijos uždaviniai. Antrame skyriuje pateiktos naudojamos vandens kokybės rodiklių nustatymo metodikos. Aprašomi filtravimo užpildų laboratorinio stendo bei geriamojo vandens ruošimo įrenginių stendo darbo gamybinėmis sąlygomis principai. Trečiajame skyriuje pateikta organinių junginių nustatymo metodų palyginamoji analizė, organinių junginių frakcijų nustatymo tyrimų rezultatai, koaguliantų efektyvumo ir filtravimo užpildų panaudojimo galimybių tyrimų rezultatai bei geriamojo vandens ruošimo įrenginių stendo darbo gamybinėmis sąlygomis tyrimų rezultatai. Disertacijos tema yra paskelbta 12 mokslinių straipsnių: du – mokslo žurnaluose, referuojamuose ISI Web of Science duomenų bazėje, keturi – mokslo žurnaluose, įtrauktuose į kitas duomenų bazes, vienas – konferencijų medžiagoje, referuojamoje ISI Proceedings duomenų bazėje, keturi – užsienio tarptautinių konferencijų medžiagose, vienas – Lietuvos konferencijos medžiagoje. Disertacijos tema perskaityti vienas pranešimas respublikinėje ir penki pranešimai tarptautinėse mokslinėse konferencijose.
