The new Pilaite Gymnasium is built in the central part of Pilaitė district in Vilnius and adds to an axis of public buildings surrounded by prefabricated concrete apartment blocks built in 1989. The new school continues the fragmented perimeter development of the street, reinforcing, it with its volume, and, being a new building in the central area of the old Pilaitė micro-district, it also bolsters the public-use functionality encoded within it. The school property itself consist of four areas: the school building and its curtilage; four outdoor classrooms and recreational spaces for pupils; sports fields; and a public space - the square. The interior and exterior of the school complement each other in terms of materials, using similar finishes and colour combinations. The delicate colour scheme evokes positive, calm feelings, while the use of wood on the exterior adds a sense of warmth and comfort to the design. The Pilaitė community, having experienced such a significant qualitative change in the district, seems to have welcomed it and will likely be encouraged by it to it to expect and initiate further architectural developments. This rapid change stems from the fact that “all the parties involved have worked together to find solutions that improve the project and move it forward. The quick, smooth decision making was the force that allowed the project to go forward quickly: the community showed initiative, the municipality was willing to act, we put effort into accommodating everyone’s needs in the school's design, and the contractors were quick to build the project”.eng
