Behaviour of the staff of emergency medical care when communicating with aggressive patients

Abstract

Specialists of emergency medical care run the greatest risk of experiencing stress when communicating with an aggressive patient. It is important to protect the staff who provide emergency medical services against stress and patients’ aggressive behaviour they encounter. The aim of the research is to study the behaviour of the staff of emergency medical care when handling aggressive patients. As many as 34 respondents working in one emergency medical care department whose work is directly related to patients participated in the research. Results and conclusions: it was established that the majority of the staff of emergency medical care cope well with the behaviour of aggressive patients and are able to control their emotions in a stressful situation. A part of the staff assesses the aggressive behaviour of a patient and the actions which can be expected. Theoretical training is partly effective, there is a lack of practical experience. Sometimes the chief is not informed about the patient’s aggressive behaviour because in the employee’s opinion, such information might be treated as an inability to cope with work. Colleagues’ readiness and willingness to help and the desire to find the correct and effective solution together is extremely important in the stressful situations

Svarbu apsaugoti greitosios medicinos pagalbos paslaugas teikiantį personalą nuo streso ir agresyvaus pacientų elgesio, su kuriuo jie susiduria. Tyrimo tikslas - išnagrinėti skubios pagalbos darbuotojų elgesį bendraujant su agresyviais pacientais. Tyrime dalyvavo net 34 viename greitosios medicinos pagalbos skyriuje dirbantys respondentai, kurių darbas tiesiogiai susijęs su pacientais. Tyrimo metodas. Tyrimui atlikti pasirinktas kiekybinis anketinės apklausos metodas. Rezultatai ir išvados: nustatyta, kad didžioji dalis greitosios medicinos pagalbos personalo puikiai susidoroja su agresyvių pacientų elgesiu ir geba suvaldyti emocijas stresinėje situacijoje. Dalis personalo vertina agresyvų paciento elgesį ir veiksmus, kurių galima tikėtis. Teorinis mokymas iš dalies efektyvus, trūksta praktinės patirties. Kartais vadovas nėra informuojamas apie paciento agresyvų elgesį, nes, darbuotojo nuomone, tokia informacija gali būti traktuojama kaip nesugebėjimas susidoroti su darbu. Stresinėse situacijose itin svarbus kolegų pasirengimas ir noras padėti bei noras kartu rasti teisingą ir efektyvų sprendimą
