dc.description.abstract | High vehicle speed still remains one of the main causes oi traffic accidents. Speed reduction results the consequences of all types of traffic accidents, because it is one of the key kev factors that determine both the risk oi accidents and their conseųuences. According to the European Commission, 40-50% of drivers drive faster than allowed and 10-20% of them exceed the speed more than 10 km/h. Speed feedback sign is a precautionary speed regulator that does not phvsically affect the speed oi vehicle movement and it is designed to inform drivers about the vehicle's speed in a particular section. Its impact is significantly dependent on the environment and in addition to other traffic calming measures, common vehicle traffic speed, drivers' awareness and so on. Speed feedback sign perfoms not only the speed control function, but it can also he used as a mean fixing and storing relevant traffic data. 56 informative speed feedhack signs were installed on Lithuanian roads oi nafional significance in 2008-2013. Road Research Institute of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University conducted a study on the effectiveness of these measures tor accident rate and vehicle speed. The results oi the analysis showed the positive change in traffic safety indicators: road traffic accidents decreased by 33.71%, dead - 57.14%, and injured - 45.76%. On the national roads, 40%, 60% and 40.74% respectively. The competent application oi speed feedback signs enables a reduction oi vehicle speed from 2 km/h to 8 km/h. The average oi speed exceed reduces by 30 % in the operation area of speed feedback signs. | eng |
