The current regulatory and methodological support for the processes of research, design and construction of roads significantly lags behind many innovative solutions. Among the reasons for this gap there is the lack of a sufficient number of studies and assessments of the effectiveness of innovation, as well as changes in the rules for the design only after proven practice experience. This creates a vicious circle of problems - outdated rules preclude the application of new solutions, and without assessing the effectiveness of these solutions it is difficult to improve the same rules. In practice, the design of the longitudinal profile accepted maximum effect at minimum cost. To date, science has mathematically grounded methods of finding a solution to this problem in this sense as “to the maximum of any one indicator”, as a rule, “does not pay, neither in the maximum nor in the minimum of others”. The article considers the mathematical basis of the optimization and possible ways of finding the criterion of effectiveness of the design solution. The advantages, disadvantages and possible cases of use of a particular criterion of efficiency as an objective function was analyzed.eng
