Nowadays, supply chains (SCs) are becoming more complex: enterprises are operating on global basis; many of them are using multiple carriers and multiple transport modes. This complicates information flow among SC members and efficient management of resources. Global positioning system (GPS) can help to deal with such challenge. GPS can be used to collect information and to manage SC operations more efficiently. The article deals with GPS usage for freight transportation in SC, presents dynamics of freight transport in the Baltic Sea Region. In addition, the article deals with GPS usage for various freight transport modes, presents technical architecture, which provides possibility for SC parties to track different freights delivered by rail in single wagons. The article concentrates on efficient SC management, presents case study, which defines GPS usage in SCs of the Baltic Sea Region enterprises.eng
