During the spring term of 1991 the author of this article worked as a visiting professor at the Department of Environmental Design of the Faculty of Architecture at the Rome University "La Sapienza". In the article the author shortly presents the Faculty, its structure, teaching process, the order of taking qualification examinations for getting the licence for independent work, etc. Three architects of Lithuania have graduated from this Faculty: Vytautas Lansbergis-Žemkalnis in 1925, Stasys Rudokas in 1930 and Edmundas Karanauskas in 1941. Massimiliano Fuksas, a famous European architect of Lithuanian origin, has graduated from this architectural school in 1968. The article pays great attention to the methods of practical training and course projects and the analysis of their contents and volume. The author of the article stresses that this architectural school in teaching disciplines of architectural design devotes great attention to the pre-project analysis. In the pre-project analysis students had to perform an evaluation of the function of the object (the project of which they were making), the chosen territory and the surrounding environment, and to draw up a scenario of human activities in the project space and to foresee its needs during this activity, etc. Besides, after getting a task for a course project, students had to study special literature, analogical projects and the implemented objects as well as to prepare a critical illustrated review which they had to present to the project adviser a month before maintaining the project. The review was to consist of illustrative drawings (the size of which was 50x70 cm) and the text of a critical survey. The aim of such a review is to show the present level of theory, design and implementation as well as to reveal the purposefulness and to model the idea of the future project. It also aims at giving a student the necessary knowledge, so that when maintaining a project he could know how to reveal the. idea of his project, its peculiarities and advantages, comparing them with the best analogues and in this way to be able to persuade a future client on the advantages of his project. I think that such reviews not only broaden the outlook of students but they also allow them to evaluate better their ideas and to gain self-confidence. This is very important for participating in free market.eng
