The German autobahnen were originally planned in the late 1920s. The autobahn's chief was Fritz Todt, engineer - manager of a Munich construction firm, Nazi party member, and close confidant of Hitler. The autobahn designers had inspected the existing American parkways. The first autobahn was a 20 km stretch from Bonn to Cologne, which was built in 1920- 1932. Another early contender for the title of the first freeway was the Italian autostrada. A great deal of support for autostrada came from Mussolini when he came to power in 1922. The first autostrada was a two-way, single carriageway, controlled-access road built 50 km from Milan to Verse and Lake Como. The first stage was opened in 1924. Work on the first urban parkway in New Your City began in 1934. Parkways soon became a significant part of American travel mores. Their success and that of the new German autobahnen whetted the American appetite for freeways. Soviet Union began construction of the first motorway Moscow-Minsk in 1936. The first motor-way in Lithuania - approximately 100 km long route from Vilnius to Kaunas - was finished in 1970.eng
