Starting from digital mapping origin, various researchers endeavoured to create a universal cartographic generalisation technology for automated derivation of desirable scale maps from larger scale source database. However, the problem remains to eliminate human factor in respect of a proper map composition and suitable design. The article is about new possibilities of cartographic generalisation using object oriented databases. Based on the latest European research projects the author investigated modern conception of cartographic generalisation the so-called "agent generalisation", which makes precondition for fully automated processing. It presents object generalisation procedures, technological conditions, main influences and determinants to quality and consistency of derived cartographical data products. The conclusions identified the importance of the source database structure (specification) in terms of homogeneity and compatibility, influencing further generalisation process. Agent generalisation success depends on the agent's definitions, model hierarchic structure and decision-making procedures on local (micro) and higher (meso) levels.eng
