Reconstruction of Lithuanian railways networks

Abstract

Priority in developing Lithuanian transport system must be given to the railways. 46% of transportation works are carried out by railways at the moment. Main problems in the begining of reconstruction of railways network in Lithuania are: efficient connection with the European railways; tranzit transport; corridors; defining of rastional local transportation routes. The best place for connection with the European railways is the station of Šeštokai. Furher development routes are to be analyzed carefully. Defining tranzit transport corridors, priority must be given to such routes: Gudogai - Kybartai, Klaipėda - Vilnius, Šeštokai - Šiauliai. These routes must be reconstructed first. Some of them must be changed to the European standard railways. For the optimization of local railway transportations the shortest and most effective routes must be defined and reconstructed, while care about the other routes must be postponed.
