Functioning of an ecosystem and landscape must be investigated in view of time and space. A model describing hierarchic subordination of structural elements in natural systems demonstrates that functioning of an ecosystem is influenced by geology - relief - hydrology - soil formation - soil variation - community (in the order of power and importance). Ecological assessment should be based on the following three elements: classification and charting of ecosystems, analysis of susceptibility of ecosystems, assessment of the quality of treatment. Assessment of environmental quality in an ecosystem with disturbed functioning can be based on floristic data, data on plants and animals, account being taken of the physical and chemical properties of the environment. The position of a given biotope between the extreme levels of environmental quality depends on the index of biotic diversity and that of abiotic variability.eng
