His military efforts promoted a similar awareness in Germany, Austria and other countries. Indeed, Napoleon had a major impact on European roadmaking. The military influence on roadmaking was so strong in Denmark, that the Danish civil road officials wore military-style uniforms. A convenient place for new boulevards in many cities was along the site of old fortifications and city walls. Henry IV began this pattern in Paris in early XVII century, and by 1789 the city had some 30 km of ring boulevards, mostly 40 m wide. The grand boulevards of Paris were constructed between 1850 and 1870 and were dictated in purpose and geometry by the potential requirements of a defending army and the need to permit the free movement of troops into areas of Paris. German autobahn construction was accelerated by Adolf Hitler soon after he came to power in 1933. In May of the same year, he announced that highway building would unit, preserve, and expand the Reich and then implemented a scheme to build 7 thous. km of Reichsautobahnen. The Russian engineers during the years of World War II had built a lot of wooden paved military roads through forests and wet areas. Constructions of such road pavements are described in this article too. The last of the great military road builders may have been Australia's Len Beadell, who created thousands of kilometers of road in the empty center of Australia in 1950s and 1960s to accommodate the testing of rockets and nuclear weapons.eng
