dc.description.abstract | Strong growth in bank credit to the private sector is the most distinct feature of recent developments in Lithuanian financial sector. In mid-2004, year-on-year increase in total credit to the private sector equaled to 58.8 percent, wjile bank lending to households expanded by more than 108 percent. In general, credit can grow rapidly for three reasons, including financial deeprning, normal cyclical upturn in the economy, and excessive unstable movements or credit booms. Comparing with other countries, new members of the EU, Lithuania started experiecing a rapid rise in bank credit to the private sector much later. The stock of credit, currently amounting to 23.4 percent in terms of gross domestic product, also remains comparatively low in Lithuania. | eng |
