Development of general information system for higher education and research area

Abstract

The presentation deals with reviewing of development of current Lithuanian higher education and research information system, its organisational structure and creation stages. Aiming at faster adapting to rapidly changing external environment, higher education institutions are trying to create and implement institution resource planing and management components: Human Resources Management, Financial Management, Admission, Record Management, Campus Management, etc. Most of higher education institutions have been using the ICT technologies for educational purposes for several years, but in many cases information received from different institutions is incomplete, not accurate, sometimes delayed. The Ministry of Education and Science, while executing higher education reform, expresses initiative to influence these processes, because it needs high quality and fast statistic information from higher education institutions. The precise statistic information is very important for the higher education institution management, too. A team of information technologies specialists who are representatives from different institutions undertook research of the current situation, analyzed existing institutional information systems, suggested conceptions, developed specifications for the unified Higher Education and Research Information System.
