However, in the course of time, anthropogenic activity gradually changed the surrounding landscape. The recent dramatic increase of traffic intensity has necessitated improvement of the functional design of roads and roadside zones. Solution of this problem requires assessment of the actual condition of roads, traffic intensity and composition, accident rate, the arrangement and condition of service and relaxation objects, the quality of services and patterns of landscape transformations. Our analysis revealed that roads and roadside zones, as well as their functional design, developing since time immemorial until today have undergone considerable physical and functional chantes, and recently roads and their impact zone have become a factor affecting the way of life and human habits and promoting the processes of urbanization in Lithuania.eng
