A rather dense network of motor roads in Lithuania offer good conditions for transportation of passengers and cargoes. Development of tourism and transit transportation largely depends on the rational distribution of traffic service facilities: hotels, motels, restaurants, cafeterias, rest places, fuel stations, etc. The condition of the road pavement is a very important factor of travel comfort and traffic safety. It is evaluated according to the indices of wear and smoothness. The authors of the present article amphasize that the roadside service facilities for travelers may influence the flow of tourists, holiday-makers and other kinds of passengers. The factual distribution of service complexes and objects near the Lithuanian main roads was evaluated through experimental investigations. Basing on the analysis of the West European, Central European and Russian experience the service facilities were divided into categories A, B, C, and D according to the rest duration. The theoretical model in Fig. 1 demonstrates the suggested distribution of rest places. In authors' opinion the distance between the new complexes of lower category should be half the distance between the rest complexes of higher category. The recommendations for improvement of roads and their infrastructure would facilitate the comfortable travel for passengers and drivers.eng
