Numerical and experimental investigations of a novel design multi-modal piezoelectric traveling wave actuator are presented. The actuator composes aluminum cylindrical stator with inner conical cavity and piezo ceramic rings located at the node of the first longitudinal vibration mode of the actuator and the bottom of the actuator. Actuator is clamped using bolt that is fixed at the bottom of the cylinder. Operation principle of the actuator is based on a superposition of the first longitudinal and second bending modes of the stator. Conical cavity in the cylinder is used to amplify vibration amplitudes of the contacting surface. Four electric signals with phase difference by π/2 are used to drive actuator. Results of numerical and experimental investigations are in good agreement.eng
