Abstract

The paper discusses briefly Vilnius Old Town geological and hydrogeological conditions, the influence of the latter and other factors on the state of buildings and structures in an investigated part of the Old Town. According to the collected and generalized engineering-geological investigation data maps indicating the spreading limits of technogenic and other soils as well as the distribution of soil water change horizons were made. On the basis of these data areas of the Old Town suitable for undergroud construction were distinguished. A review of foundation construction, reconstruction and modern methods of foundation strengthening, was made according to the effectiveness of the latter in building reconstruction.
