The information technologies quickly discovered their place not only in the everyday life, but also in the study programmes, proposed by the universities. As a result, the popularity of distance learning studies has especially increased over the last years. The number of students increased almost twice, and the University became the leader according to the number of distance learning study programs, offered at VGTU. According to the Director of the Distance Learning Centre, Assoc. Dr. Vaidotas Trinkūnas, they are using much more opportunities of information technologies nowadays. The information technologies became an integral part of studies at the university: the electronic timetables of lectures, the possibility to have consultations with lecturers via e-mail, the presentation of study material in the virtual environment, the provision of general information on the Internet and many others. This is one of the reasons, promoting students interest in the distance education. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vaidotas Trinkūnas, the Director of the Distance Learning Centre, Assoc. Prof. Dr Jolanta Stupakova from the Department of Physics, and Dr. Viktoras Chadyšas, the lecturer at the Department of Mathematical Statistics – the organisers and executors, are talking about the attractiveness of these studies and the challenges, teachers are facing.
