The strangeness of alterity
Abstract
For Levinas neither art nor science, neither imagination nor phenomenology, but ethics is the manner in which the radical Stranger is encountered. The stranger in this fundamental sense is not the epistemologically familiar or unfamiliar but the ethically strange, the unique or singular other—the one who faces and obligates me, singular alterity, insular responsibility.
