Turizmo plėtotės strategijos projektas yra ilgalaikės Lietuvos ūkio (ekonominės) plėtotės iki 2015 m. strategijos, rengiamos pagal Lietuvos Respublikos Vyriausybės 2001 m. spalio 30 d. nutarimą Nr. 1274 „Dėl ilgalaikės Lietuvos ūkio (ekonominės) plėtotės strategijos projekto rengimo“, sudedamoji dalis. Turizmo plėtotės strategija parengta atsižvelgiant į LR Vyriausybės patvirtintą Nacionalinę turizmo plėtotės programą (1994,1999 m.) ir šios programos įgyvendinimo 2000-2002 m. priemones. Vykdant Turizmo įstatymą, atsižvelgiant į siūlomą Turizmo įstatymo pakeitimą, ji derinama su Nacionaliniu plėtotės planu (2001-2003) ir pasaulio turizmo bei ES turizmo organizacijų numatytomis strateginėmis kryptimis bei politika, Pasaulio turizmo statistika, numatant turizmo poveikį kitoms ūkio šakoms. Tourism development strategy covers an analysis of the existing situation in Lithuania, the main tourism markets, tourist resources, opportunities for the development of tourism business, general tendencies for the development of global and European Union tourism that have an effect on the development of tourism in Lithuania. After conducting analysis, strategic goals and tasks were formulated as well as long-term priority trends of development were envisaged in stimulating local and incoming tourism: cultural and cognitive, business and objective, resort, water, ecological and rural tourism. The development of the said trends of tourism development in compliance with the possibilities of the existing resources of Lithuania and its regions. In implementing the foreseen measures for tourism development, it is striven to strengthen the co-operation and contact opportunities between separate authorities and private business sectors, to rationally master and use the proceeds of the EU structural funds for consolidating of competitiveness of the tourism sector. Seeking to achieve the said goals, the actions and measures are proposed related to the improvement of tourism administration and legal environment, the quantitative and qualitative development of tourism infrastructure and services, preparation of specialists in the field of tourism and recreation.In developing the business opportunities of the national community, it is necessary to make the country competitive in the field of tourism as an important link in the Baltic Sea tourism region and the country wherein competitive tourist regions are being formed, with the creation of the grounds for partnership and co-operation between the key segments of recreation and tourism business, namely, state, non-governmental institutions and private organisations, by preparing programmes for the development of tourism for achieving the goals of this strategy consistently and in a balanced way programmes.
