Abstract

A lot of small radius curves are usually reconstructed when designing speed railroads on existing routes. It is done because small radius curves minimize the speed of passanger speed trains. In order to prevent unnecessary expenses it is obligatory to estimate reconstruction costs, investment timing and feasibility. The article presents the mechanism of calculating accumulation of losses in small radius curves (Formula 1). In addition, the technique for estimating additional travelling time and mechanical work is presented in the formulas 2 and 3, and a simplified method for calculating the total reconstruction costs is given in the Formula 7. The proposed technique is not accurate but the results are within the reliability limits and could be used for a comparison of different alternatives.
