Abstract
The rented dwelling house featuring the historism architecture characteristic of the t-nd of the XIX C. and being preserved for public knowledge and usage offers a multifunctional purpose. Premises on the first floor are adapted for commercial activity, i.e. small shops connected by a trading atrium with a cafe/terrace on the level of the second floor. The second and third floors containing the blocks that overlook the street and feature restored representational interiors are designed for offices. In a two-level penthouse, residential apartments are situated. Transport has been hidden under the building and yard. An upper part of the building has also changed in essence: a penthouse and apartments in a penthouse have been constructed, an inner yard of the building has been covered forming an atrium. According to the projec t architect SauliusMisevičius, there are no such concepts as the "old" or "new" architecture. Everything represents an undivided professional activity. Therefore, the new quality has been developed referring to the two main principles that are the following: 1) to restore and highlight the extant authentic decor and the very finest elements thereof as accurately as possible especially avoiding imitation, stylisation and "restoration" of missing details; 2) new environment directly adjoining the available one, is developed by architects as especially monochromic, of cold and soft materials, and serves as a background for the intensive and emotionally strong historic context.
