The paper is devoted to the consideration of such surface defects of the structural elements a cavities, pores, cracks, etc. originating during the casting process. The states of stress and strain produced in the regions of such defects influence the crack formation conditions. The apparatus, necessary to evaluate the plate loading conditions has been designed and tested. Longitudinal and lateral strains at different plate surface points have been determined experimentally. The stress and strain states in the defective locations have been analyzed by modeling the form and magnitude of the defects. It is determined that the maximum principal stresses [] in the stress concentration area can differ by 13% due to its position. It has been pointed out that the crack is generated at the crest of the defect having the shape of an elongated hole. The depth of the crack is below 1 mm. Until the crack of different size is situated in the area of concentration effect, it is affected by the stresses of different intensity. Under certain nominal stress, the crack, protruding outside the stress concentration field, may stop propagating. Stress intensity limit factor [] is estimated as the criterion to stop propagation of the crack in the defective medium. Stan naprężeń i odkształceń w okolicy defektów określa warunki powstawania szczelin. Wykonano i zbadano urządzenie do badania próbek w kształcie płyt. Podczas badań laboratoryjnych badano rozkład naprężeń i odkształceń płyt z otworami.
