Abstract
The concept of the development of separate passenger transport modes in Lithuania is described in the article. Road transport needs to have a better defined interurban bus network, more new buses, more attention should be given to the development of the international highway “Via Baltica”, increasing new bus routes to the Western countries, etc. In the nearest future railways should replace buses for passenger haulage by such routes as Vilnius - Kaunas, Vilnius - Turmantas and others. It is necessary to establish two high-speed railway lines of a European standard for passengers and cargo: the first one to Paris - Berlin - Warsaw - Kaunas - Riga - Tallinn (Helsinki) with a separate branch to St. Petersburg and the second one - Klaipėda - Kaunas - Vilnius, Minsk, Kiev, Odesa. Besides, it is important to reconstruct and modernize some railway lines within Lithuania (to build two lines, railroads, to electrificate the railway system, to modernize stations etc.) Greater attention should be given to the international sea transport. For this reason Klaipėda port needs a complex renovation: establishing of a passenger terminal, opening of a new passenger road transport lines to Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Finland and Great Britain, obtaining of new ships, etc. Air transportation must be expanded too. Lithuania needs transatlantic flights, as well as those to the Far East, China, India. “LAL” must sell the old Soviet planes and buy new Western - type ones. For a successful development of transportation in Lithuania, it is very important to establish two free economic zones - at the Klaipėda port and Zokniai aeroport.
