The pozzolanic properties of a range of clay bricks from Britain, Denmark, Lithuania and Poland have been investigated. The bricks have been ground to cement fineness and the ground material analysed for particle size distribution, chemical composition, and mineralogica content. Pozzolanic activity has been assessed chemically (EN196 - 5) by placing the ground material in a supersaturated solution of lime at 40°C for eight days and determining the CaO and OH concentrations. The ground brick types have also been used to partially replace cement in mortar at replacement levels of 10, 20 and 30 %. The sand to binder ratio for the mortar was fixed at 2.5 : 1 and two water to birder (w/ b) ratios 0.4 and 0.55 were employed. Mortar bars of dimensions 40 x 40 x 160 mm were cured for 7, 28 and 90 days and tested in both flexure and compression. The chemical test for pozzolanic activity confirms that all the brick types investigated have good pozzolanic activity and this is supported by the strength development date of the mortar bars. There is however quite a variation in relative strength between mortars made with the different ground brick types and the reasons for this variation are discussed. The work reported is part of international project funded under the COPERNICUS programme and involoves potential utilisation of waste clay brick in the production of durable mortar and concrete.
