From an analysis of the earlier information the following results can be seen. Earlier the Republic of Lithuania used GOST 2.874-82 according to which the iron concentration in drinking-water could not be more than 0.3 mg/l. But if the iron concentration was 1 mg/l, the iron removal equipment was not to be installed. Therefore about 70% of drinking-water in the distribution system is not treated properly. New Lithuanian Hygiene Norms were prepared in November 1998. According to the new HN 24 ,,Drinking-water indicator analysis, measurement and using methods mandatory requirements", drinking-water has three quality classes. Very good quality water can contain not more than 0.1 mg/l, good quality water can have 0.2 mg/l and satisfactory quality water can have not more than 1.0 mg/l of iron.
