Since the beginning of 2000 the requirements of the Hygiene Norm HN 24 : 1998 for the quality of drinking-water come into force in Lithuania. According to the Norm, drinking-water is into three classes: very good, good and satisfactory, depending on the properties of water. Drinking-water is supplied for the Kaunas city from four underground watering-places: Petrašiunai, Vičiūnai, Eiguliai and Kleboniškis. They make 250 thousand m3/d of natural exploitable water resources. In 1999 the consumption of drinking-water in Kaunas was on average 71.2 thousand m3/d. No watering-place of Kaunas has water-treatment facilities. Water supplied to the distrilbution network is only disinfected. Water from the Ligulae and Kleboniškis watering-places could be attributed to a good-quality class of drinking-water, and water from the Vičiūnai watering-place belongs to a satisfactory-quality class.
