Abstract
The study is based on statistical data and data collected by Lithuanian and foreign experts. From 1989 to 1997 the amount of freight transported by the Lithuanian railways decreased 2.7 times, passenger transportation decreased 3.1 times. In 1996 flow decrease was stopped, and in 1997 the first symptoms of flow stabilization and increase were identified. Freight and flow forecasts were made till 2010. It is calculated that till 2005 freight flows will annually rise by about 4 percent and from 2005 this growth will slow down reaching about 3.2 percent per year.
