Abstract
Highway engineering department of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University celebrated its 80th anniversary on 12 April, 2002. The department training highway engineers was encountered with a number of problems. It was often moved from one higher school to another. In 1922-1930 Highway department existed in Lithuanian University, while in 1930-1940 it belonged to Vytautas Magnus University. In 1946-1950 it was a part of Kaunas State University, in 1969-1990 - of Kaunas Politechnic, in 1969-1990 - of Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute, in 1990-1996 it was part of Vilnius Technical University which since 1996 has become Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. From the first days of its existence the department was involved in training of engineers and doing research work. In the period from 1949 to 2002 fifty five generations of highway engineers were trained, among them: 2 generations (10 engineers) in Kaunas University, 19 in Kaunas Politechnic (503 engineers), 21 in Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute, 6 in Vilnius Technical University and 7 in Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. The total number of graduates from 1949 to 2002 is 1415 highway engineers.
