Towards a knowledge society through the implementation of information technologies

Abstract

Development and implementation of information technologies is a global process from which Lithuania and the Baltic region is not exempted. Even during economic difficulties, attention to this area of intellectual activity did not decrease. The modern economy is now more characterised by the application of various information resources and communication means. The result is the acceleration of innovations due to faster implementation of new technologies and ideas. A joint memorandum, titled Creation of Information Society in Lithuania, was signed in 1999 by the country's parliamentary parties, the Academy of Science, the Chamber of Commerce and Trade, different associations of information technologies, higher education institutions, rectors conference, youth organisations, etc. In light of this document, universities have responded by implementing new teaching methods, networking educational institutions (common databases, united library system), preparing learning materials accessible through informational networks, etc. This lets the institution compete for its share of the intellectual market, to be more attractive to international students, and has allowed graduates to compete for jobs in the local, national and global labour market.
