The first technical high school in St. Peterburg, Institute of road engineers, was opened in 1810. Its first students from Lithuania were major-general J. Žareckis (1800-1869), one of the builders of Kronshtat, and S. Kerbedis (1810-1899), professor of Institute of road engineers, famous designer of hydrotechnical structures and bridges.
