Abstract
Despite the contributions of the engineers Tresaguet and Telford, they had not produced the quantum advance necessary to satisfy the growing needs of enhanced and extended travel. The advance to be supplied by, John Loudon McAdam from his distinctly nonengineering background. McAdam became involved with roads when he has made a trustee of the Ayrshire Turnpike in the Scottish Lowlands in 1787. The turnpikes of the time had an urgent need for the skills of Telford and McAdam and used those skills well. It was this increasing and unsatisfied need for better road pavements that created the opportunity for McAdam to produce a major paradigmatic shift in road technology. As a consequence of the new methods, for the first time the speed at which Royal Mail coaches could travel was limited, not by the road, but by the ability of the horses. That speed was about 15 kmfln.
