dc.description.abstract | Lithuanian railways network is not adapted to the needs of internal cargo transportation. First railway line was layed down in 1863. The lane connected Petersburg with Warsaw, Karaliaučius was added to this railway lane later. Despite the weaknesses of the development, Lithuanian railway is still the most important transporting mode in the Republic. 46 % of the total transportation works or 11 milliard ton/km per year are carried out by railways at the moment. For the reconstruction of internal railway network the priority must be layed down on the construction of a new routes: Alytus - Valkininkai (90 km), Kaunas - Jurbarkas - Tauragė (115 km), Utena - Panevėžys (90 km), Bugeniai - Skuodas (40 km), Jonava - Ukmergė - Anykščiai (145 km). Two transit corridors must be formed for the improvement of the conditions for the transit traffic. The first - South - Worth - corridor must go through Šeštokai and Kaunas to Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki. The Second - East - West - corridor must go from Klaipėda through Vilnius to Belorussia and Russia. There is a need for development not only the railway, but also its requisites, rolling - stock stations, passenger service system. The search for funds and ideas for solving mentioned problems could be aimed not only at a home country, but also at foreign resources. | eng |
