Abstract

The paper discusses the development conditions and some peculiarities of embankments as urban public spaces in Lithuanian towns by the 20th century, analyses historic and sociocultural embankment development conditions, considering both general conditions having an influence on the economic development of towns (including embankments) and the influence of social groups and local authorities. The paper also presents a review of changes of embankment functions during different periods of urban development in Lithuania, discusses the typology of embankments as public spaces.
