Abstract
This type of houses were mainly built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. They were the houses of relatively small space and volume. The decorative, geometrically shaped villas and the wooden houses, identical to the rural architectural tradition, still play an important role in creating the unic Druskininkai architecture. The building of wooden constructions in Druskininkai during the Soviet times was almost stopped. The other type of materials and technologies were used to create the architectural pieces at that time, which were thought being modern. Consequently, in Druskininkai massive buildings of reinforced concrete and bricks appeared. While designing those buildings the distinctive context of the wooden heritage of the town was not taken into consideration. In the recent period of Lithuanian independence, the changes happening in Druskininkai show that the wooden buildings continue to be sometimes even a barely significant obstacle to realize the goals of the modern architecture. The buildings from bricks or reinforced concrete, built during the second half of the 20th century, were supposed to make the town a modern one, however, they were taking away the distinctiveness. Modem architecture is not only the search for the impressive and progres- sive patterns, but also a desire to better understand the features of a local context, its values and the possibilities to continue the traditions.
