The aim of the work was to investigate a balance between low and high social status and health. Object and methods. The study cohort comprised Lithuanian inhabitants aged 18 and over examined by the method of social questioning (interview at the respondent's home). The study sample was a representative one, formed by the method of multistage probability selection. The investigation was carried out annually in the period 1997-2000. Analysis of the summary data encompassed 4059 individuals (1946 men and 2113 women). Their health status was assessed subjectively on a 5-point range scale. Data on the respondents' education, income per family member, occupational prestige and the basic demographic data were gathered. The data were analyzed by the factor analysis method. The community and specificity ratio was used as the interaction balance index. Results. Three latent factors were determined in the interaction between health and a low or high social status. Their total dispersion was 58.5% for the low and 53.6% for the high social status, the balance index being 1.40 and 1.15, respectively. Conclusions. The interaction between health and social status in the process of personal development takes 53.65% to 58.55%. The other information on development belongs to specific parameters not connected with social status. The development community and specificity ratio as an index of disbalance was 1.40 for the low and 1.15 for the high social status individuals. There exist internal contradictions in both layers of social status. The low social status income and age were the major determinants of harmonious development disbalance.
