The analysis made by the authors has shown that in four Lithuanian cities including Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Šiauliai most of the passengers, i.e. up to 81.3% were carried by car, while 14.9% of passengers were transported by bus and only 3.8% of them were carried by railroad. Therefore, a major goal of public transport is not a competition between bus and railway transport but the search for effective means aimed at attracting passengers to public transport. This paper considers passenger transportation markets and their distribution between road and railway transport on interurban Lithuanian routes as well as between the above means of transport and air and sea transport operating on international routes. These problems became especially important for the transportation system of Lithuania when the country joined the European Union and had to develop its transport according to the EU requirements.eng
