The article deals with the problems of physical education organisational aspects in reformed Lithuanian high schools. The aim of the work was to research students' attitude and opinion on physical education in its action in high school, to clearify the motives of students' physical activeness, need and posibilities for physical self-development. The research was carried out in May 2003. The questionnaire method was employed to investigate 1409 first year students in twelve state high schools (1097 those who have attended compulsory and 312 - the ones having attended physical education practices as a free choice). It was established that under unfavourable economic and social circumstances, the most effective model for students' physical education appears to be compulsory practices. Participating in them, students acquire certain knowledge, skills and abilities for self-dependent physical activity. Practices of that kind as well as teachers' behaviour receive positive evaluation. About 40 percent of interrogated students do not have appropriate motivation for physical self-development and do not devote their time for physical exercises. The obstacles limiting their physical activeness are: too great study loads, too high costs of sport services, more attention devoted to other free-time activities. We think that the reasons of this lie in their motivation which for the majority of the students investigated is rather poor, lacking wider sociocultural context and restricted to personal immage creation.
