The increasing traffic intensity and the growing number of heavy vehicles on streets and roads of Lithuania resulted in the plastic type deformations – ruts and corrugations – on road and street pavement. These deformations deteriorate traffic conditions for vehicles and aggravate the pavement maintenance work. Occurrence of ruts on asphalt concrete pavement may also indicate an insufficient capacity of the road pavement construction. Thus, selection of asphalt concrete mixtures and their components meeting the conditions of traffic and climate, designing of mixture composition, application of rational technological process of asphalt concrete pavement installation, quality control and drafting of new normative documentation are of great importance. Asphalt concrete pavements of different types and composition shall be used on roads and streets with different traffic intensity and transport flows to avoid plastic deformations. Crushed stone and mastic asphalt concrete mixtures, which consist of 100 % of high quality crushed stone material, solid (B50/70, B70/100) polymer modified bitumen shall be used on roads and streets where an intensive traffic of heavy vehicles prevails. Asphalt concrete mixtures of this type and composition can be used in setting up intersections, bus and trolleybus stops on the streets with less traffic intensity. In 2004–2006, Department of Roads of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University worked out the project of construction rules for asphalt concrete pavements of the streets of Lithuanian towns and settlements. These rules will be applied when building, reconstructing, repairing and maintaining surface layers of asphalt concrete pavements of the streets of towns and settlements.
