Lietuvos geografinės informacijos infrastruktūra yra techninių ir metodinių sprendimų visuma, kurios atsiradimas neabejotinai turės įtakos geografijos mokslo raidai Lietuvoje. Straipsnyje aptariami svarbiausi metodiniai pasiekimai plėtojant LGII: įvairius aspektus apimanti valstybės geografinės informacijos valdymo vizija, sukurta bendra geografinės informacijos naudojimo sistema, įvesta geoprodukto ir geografinio taikomojo uždavinio samprata, bendras georeferencinių duomenų modelis ir georeferencinių duomenų bazių harmonizavimo principai. Geografinės informacijos sąvokų žinynas ir teminės sritys – įvairių sričių vartotojams, kuriems svarbi geografinė informacija, skirti sprendimai. LGII sprendimai sudaro prielaidas naujos disciplinos – geografinės informacijos mokslo – atsiradimui Lietuvoje. 3) geographic data models, of which the unified georeference data model is the most important. This model allows automated integration of large-scale (local) georeference data into a unified national georeference database. It is based on unique object identifiers across all georeference databases and on standard update and harmonisation procedures; 4) the GIS glossary is provided as a web application integrated into the geoportal. It currently encloses about 500 English terms and their translations into Lithuanian. It is possible to define the types of relations among the terms (e. g., their equivalent in other languages, synonyms, broader / narrower terms, etc.), languages in which the term and its equivalent can be submitted. Any user of the LGII geo-portal can perform a search in the glossary, review a detailed description of each term, including the concept, an acronym, definition, source, origin, notes and lexical attributes. Community channels and the user forum are an inseparable part of the LGII. Community channels are designed as LGII portal environments where professionals of corresponding fields can store and share documents, references, relevant spatial data queries, discuss and receive methodological help from channel administrators. The article introduces some of these decisions, in particular, the geographic data exchange system, geographic application services, a unified georeference data model and harmonisation of national and local georeference databases. The possible development of geographic information science as a separate discipline is discussed.
