Abstract
The article presents ways to rationalise passenger carriage by rail on the Vilnius-Daugpilis, -Ignalina, -Turmantas, -Visaginas, -Didžiasalis, -Utena routes, based on comprehensive investigations. Exhaustive study of the passenger flows and the passenger interrogatory (the later has covered over 80 percent of passengers) are presented. The largest short - comings of passenger carriage are uncovered and major proposals for the rationalisation of passenger carriage are presented. This enables to "save" two Diesel trains, to work out more optimal train schedule (for the most part satisfying passengers' interests), etc. The total annual economic effect of those proposals is 966 thousands of lits.
