Abstract
The influence of various oxides, hydroxides and carbonates on the methyl mercaptan combustion process was investigated by the method of thermodynamic function value calculation with the aim to determine its activity. The compound activity was evaluated according to equilibrium constant values for various temperatures. It is shown that using oxides, hydroxides and carbonates during mercaptan combustion, equilibrium constant logarithm values increase because corresponding sulphates are formed and these reactions are of an exothermic nature. It is also determined that compounds of alkali metals with a larger molecular mass are more active during methyl mercaptan oxidation, while the activity of sodium oxides, hydroxides and carbonates is greater than that of compounds corresponding to other alkali metals. Other oxides with decreasing activity investigated in this work can be arranged as follows: PbO, MnO, CdO, NiO, ZnO, CuO, Al,03. Cadmium and manganese activity is close oxide to oxide activity. The lower the temperature, the higher is the activity of these compounds during methyl mercaptan oxidation.
