A small scale combined heat and power (CHP) unit is usually selected according to the heat and electricity demand and their operating variations. Besides, the operation of this unit is defined by heat demand, which considerably varies not only in the course of week but also in the course of day. To optimize the operation of a CHP unit, to decrease the influence of heat demand variations and to extend the operational and maintenance (O&M) time of the equipment, heat accumulation tanks are applied. This paper sets out to analyze the possibilities of coordination of heat accumulation tanks' volume and heat and electricity demand with the minimal investments and O&M expenditures. The optimum volume of small scale CHP heat accumulation tanks was found to be influenced by the variation in time of heat and electricity maximal demand and by the estimation of the number of turns-on of the CHP unit. The analysis is based on the feasibility study and monitoring data of the operating small scale CHP plant of the rehabilitation hospital in Palanga.
