Typically, cellulose fibers are used to absorb excess binder in mixtures of stone and mastic asphalt (SMA). However, the studies conducted show that other local additives can also be used as substitutes for cellulose fibers. Consequently, a limited liability company “Velstida” initiated research on the possibility of using wood fibers to absorb the excessive binder in the SMA mixture. These wood fibers are leftovers from the manufacture of furniture and are typically incinerated or disposed of, as they are not suitable elsewhere. The research on wood fibers was conducted by the Road Research Institute of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. Research showed that 0.7% of wood fibers limit the draindown of the binder and lead to the same performance of the SMA mixture as it is with cellulose fibers.
