Utilization of more renewable energy in electric grid help to reduce the dependency on fossil fuel and environmental impact. However, the intermittency nature of wind and solar renewable energy resources renders challenges of stability, control, and economic operations for grid connected systems. Furthermore, high reliability and safe operation under faults are required to use microgrids in energy systems or healthcare facilities. This paper presents a grid-connected microgrid architecture and control strategies to increase the penetration of renewable energy percentage, and reliable operation under fault conditions. The simulation results show the effectiveness of proposed fault tolerant control strategy to control a microgrid with high percentage of renewable energy and reliable operation under faults on converters or main grid.
