Abstract
The deposition of particles impacting a surface is relevant to processes occurring in additive manufacturing using advanced 30 printing technology. Understanding the particle behaviour during contact and creating a simplified but as accurate as possible particle interaction model is necessary for achieving higher printing resolution. The paper addresses the impact behaviour of spherical particles on a plane surface at velocities up to 300 m/s. The problem is studied numerically by applying the finite element method. The focus of this report is to demonstrate the contribution of the impact velocity to the yielding pattern of particles. The dependence of the yield stress on the strain, strain rate and temperature is studied. The main results include nonlinear deformation of shape, plastic strains, stresses and temperature. The contribution of the strain rate reaches 1.5 times the increase in yielding stress, but the temperature that occurs reduces this effect.
