Freshly made monolithic lining of heating unit lining during the winter period should meet several requirements, one substantial of which is the support of above-zero temperature until heat drying of lining. However, practice shows that in some cases it is impossible to prevent freezing of the lining. Lack of information on the properties change for refractory castables of various types after such casual freezing makes it hard to predict furnace lining durability and to take a decision on its takedown or repair. The main aim of present research is to determine the influence of the freezing on the physical and mechanical properties of various types of refractory castables produced under normal conditions. The bulk density, the cold crushing strength, the shrinkage and the open porosity of the cement-based and no-cement refractory castables have been evaluated in dependence on freezing cycling.
