Vilnius public transport development: towards the more sustainable system

Abstract

Sustainable development requires the deepest integration of all shareholders and the decisions that should be taken at the innermost level of the system. This paper is focused on Vilnius public transport system. Over the past years, the situation of public transport system in Vilnius has changed significantly, but there are still strategic actions to be made. Regional integration results in the transfer of the benefits of public transport system of Vilnius to suburban areas. On the other hand, better exploitation of the territory and resources. Such integration would mean collaboration between municipals, unified management systems, alternative services and new possibilities for people with special needs. The latter group of passengers must be the center of attention because they have equal needs but limited opportunities for mobility. The aim of this paper is to analyse the scientific literature, foreign practice to highlight the essential directions of such development. In addition to analysis of the current situation, the strategic recommendations are formulated.
