Santrauka
The square is one of the elements of the town’s morphological structure. The term public space in principle refers to the functional aspect while the term square primarily denotes geometrical parameters. This article aims to discuss the essential characteristics of the urban square as well as to understand the scope and possibilities of its physical transformation applicable in the European cultural context. This is achieved not only at the theoretical level but also by comparison of actual cases representing current challenges of urban space redevelopment in post-socialist cities of Central and Eastern Europe.
